My 4th Story

Last week I saw Blood: The Last Vampire, mostly because I wanted to take in Jeon Ji-Hyun, aka Gianna in the States. I had seen the trailers quite by chance and was stunned to hear her speaking comprehensible English. This was a girl I had once interpreted for when some Singaporean reporters came to Korea to interview Korean actors and actresses. Her command of English back then left something to be desired, so I was pleasantly surprised to see her really carry the movie. (Roger Ebert, in his review, said that he would watch anything again that featured Gianna.) Unfortunately, the movie itself was far from brilliant. And that got me to thinking, why not write a better vampire story? Right after dinner tonight, I headed to Starbucks and fleshed out the story. After two hours, there it was, on two pages of lined 8.5 x 11 paper--a tragic tale of love, redemption and vampires! I never would have thought that I had this story within me, and am really looking forward to the challenge.

Please do write a better vampire story. I love vampire films, but some end up failing to satisfy me.

I started the research last Saturday, to get an idea on what pop culture has done with the vampire genre--a lot has already been covered. I began to think about how I could make my vampires more unlike what we've seen to date, and I think I might have hit on something but I will have to do a lot more fact checking.

Vampire scripts are like zombie scripts: they're a dime a dozen. However, if you've hit on a unique take, I think there's a market out there, so I'd say go for it. :)

I haven't seen this film, but I think Jeon Ji-Hyun is an amazing actress. Glad to hear she's worked on her English. That can only help her.

I don't think I was ever a real fan of vampire movies until I saw Let the Right One In last year. After seeing this movie, I find myself drawn to the darkness of the stories. Like Let the Right One In, I think the way to go is to take vampires seriously but to tell a real human story. (I didn't know vampires were a metaphor for HIV+ individuals back in the 80s and 90s.)

And yes, Jeon Ji-Hyun is amazing! :-)
